I left St. Augustine on March 20, and crossed into Alabama on April 5. The weather was almost perfect with most days in the mid 70's. Only one day of rain which was a layover day in Tallahassee. I had many more days of tailwinds than of headwinds. I rode many really nice bike paths, some quiet country roads, and far too many busy highways. I never felt unsafe on the road as traffic was for the most part very respectful. I met some wonderful Warm Showers hosts, stayed in a couple of scenic campgrounds, and one really nice "old Florida" style motel.
I can't say enough good things about Warm Showers hosts. Everyone of my hosts went well beyond the expected place to stay and a shower. Most fed me, let me do laundry, and treated me really well. One day in particular I had been seeing a lot of Trump signs thinking I was in hostile country, only to pull in to my Warm Showers host's place and see Bernie stickers on their cars. But even my one host who is an outright Trump supporter is a wonderful person who treated me really well and with whom I had a great time talking about bike riding and family. I guess it goes to show you never can tell.
Here are the stats. Onward to Alabama and Mississippi.
- 17 days St. Augustine to Alabama
- 651 miles
- 9 Warm Showers stays
- 5 campgrounds
- 2 Motels
- 1 night camping on the beach
- 1 Rest day while it rained
- 1 night camping in high winds and thunderstorms
- 1 puncture, which sealed after I pumped it up again.
- 1 lost brake pad a block away from a bike shop that replaced it.
